Benefits of Physical Therapy

I am sure that most of you are somewhat familiar with what physical therapy is, but for clarification, I think it would be best to explain a little bit about what it is, and how it can help.

First of all, I would like to clarify that physical therapists are experts in improving mobility and motion in order to decrease pain.

The importance of this is that a pain-free movement is critical to maintaining a high quality of life, as well as the ability to earn a living, the ability to enjoy leisure activities, and many more day-to-day tasks.

1. Improve Your Mobility and Motion

Physical therapists work with patients of all ages and abilities to expand, restore, and maintain motion.

So – what is the importance of improved mobility and motion? First of all movement can help prevent obesity, which at this time is responsible for a large amount of US deaths. Also, studies have shown that prolonged sitting is unhealthy, and by simply walking a little bit more each day you can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. On top of all that consistent movement is vital to maintaining a healthy balance system, and maintaining balance is important to avoid major falls – which can lead to further injury and costly medical bills.

2. Use it Avoid Surgery and Prescription Drugs

As you may or may not know most patients are referred to a physical therapist by a physician in order to rehabilitate from a major medical trauma or surgery, but with the use of individualized treatment plans designed by a physical therapist, a patient can sometimes achieve the same results without the expense and side effects of surgery and prescription medication. Some of the conditions in which physical therapy can be an alternative for drugs are back pain, degenerative disk disease, meniscal tears, and knee osteoarthritis.

It is important to keep in mind that although direct access laws vary by state and insurance plans are different, anyone in the US can arrange a screening by a physical therapist without a physician’s referral.

3. Be an Active Participant in Your Recovery

Physical therapists routinely work in collaboration with their patients – which means each patient’s treatment plan is designed around the patient’s individual goals, challenges, and needs. Receiving treatment by a physical therapist is rarely a passive activity, and most people truly find that participating in their own recovery is very empowering.
